Omoto Sensei’s stories and words spring to life in this must-read account of an amazing lifetime adventure in Kendo.

PASSAGE

Al Sakamoto. On February 4, 2014, a cherished and respected member of the PNKF, Iaido 3rd Dan Joseph
Alan Sakamoto, passed away in Lake Stevens, Washington. Born June 17, 1945, he and his brother Eddie first
explored Kendo in 1979. He settled into Iai, and was a loyal member of Musokai. He was also 4th Dan in Shotokan
Karate. He had battled kidney cancer for over two years. He was a gentleman of tremendous grace, elegance, and
deepest commitment. Our sincere condolences to his brothers Larry and Eddie, children Kristine and Curtis,
grandchildren Keenan, Michael, Cory, and Alexis, and vast extended family.

Arnold Fukutomi. On April 21, 2014, a good friend and an immense resource for Kendo in Hawaii and
throughout the mainland including Canada, Kendo 7th Dan Dan Arnold Tetsuya Fukutomi, was out for his usual
evening jog when he suddenly died of heart failure. Born in Aiea July 3 1956, to Seiya and Ryoko Fukutomi, he
was a graduate of Aiea High School, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and the Electronics Institute. He served
as Systems Operator for the City and County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services. He began Kendo
in 1966 with his brother, Bryant, under Noboru Akagi Sensei. His stupendous contributions to Kendo include
serving as the Hawaii Kendo Federation President, Aiea Taiheiji Kendo Club Chief Instructor, Seibukan
Instructor, eight-time Team Hawaii competitor at the WKC, and five-time Coach for Team Hawaii at the WKC. He
received an Individual Kantosho award at 2WKC; Team Kantosho award at 8WKC; and was team captain of Team
Hawaii, which placed third at 4WKC. As coach for Team Hawaii, Arnold produced four Kantosho recipients at the
WKC as well as coached two of his women’s team members into the top 16th and 32nd finishers in the women’s
competition. Our deepest condolences to wife, Cynthia, son, Braxton, daughter, Roxie and husband Desmond
Nakamoto, mother, Ryoko, brother, Bryant and wife Florence, sister, Colleen, seven nieces and one nephew,
extended Kendo family, and two grand-dogs, Ivy and Natto.

Miyako Tanaka. In the morning of May 27, 2014, Naginata Hanshi Miyako Tanaka Price passed away. Born
1942 in Osaka, her father was a sushi master, and her mother a tea master in the Urasenke line. She was a
graduate in law and in 1963 founder of the Naginata Club, Kansai University. Her teacher was Chiyoko Tokunaga
Sensei. In 1979 the Ministry of Culture sent Tanaka Sensei to teach Naginata in Southern California. Along with
Alyne and Malyne Hazard, in 1981 she participated in the WSKF (now called PNKF) Taikai at Seattle Betsuin. In
1984 she married Steve Price. She co-founded the Northern California Naginata Federation in 1990, and served as
President of the US Naginata Federation. Our condolences to her mother, two brothers, husband, and all her
countless students.
