PASSAGE
A dear friend and loyal supporter of the PNKF and the PNNF, Kendo Kyoshi 7th Dan, Iaido 4th
Dan and Naginata 3rd Dan Benjamin Harrison Hazard, 91, passed away on May 16, 2011 in San Jose,
California. Born October 25, 1919 in South Lancaster, Massachusetts, he was educated largely in
Los Angeles. Entering UCLA in 1940, he enrolled in Japanese language courses, serving in the US
Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II for the key battles of such islands as Saipan,
Leyte, and Okinawa, then the occupation of Japan and Korea, and the Korean conflict, as a language
officer with the Central Interrogation Center. He continued to serve as a reserve officer and
retired with the rank of Colonel. After receiving a Ph.D. in History from the University of
California Berkeley he was a history professor for many years at San Jose State University.
Hazard Sensei was instrumental in fostering the growth of Kendo, Kyudo and Naginata in California
and the United States. His devotion to practicing and advancing these arts knew no bounds; for
example, since Kyudo requires a special venue for its correct practice, he built his own Kyudojo in
his garden which he gladly shared with family and friends. He frequently visited the PNKF to help
with our shinsa and taikai, and extended warm hospitality to PNKF members visiting NCKF. Preceded
in death by his beloved wife Sumi Chikamori Hazard, he is survived by his daughters Daian
Hennington, Alyne Hazard, Malyne Hazard, Francesca Custodia, three grandchildren, and extended
family. We offer our sincere condolences.
