PASSAGE
Kendo Renshi 6th Dan Kiyoshi Yasui, one of the oldest living legends of American Kendo, has passed away
peacefully on Thursday, May 24, 2012. Born September 28, 1916 in Auburn, Washington as the eldest of six
children, he moved with his parents to Shiga-ken in Japan, where he began Kendo, practicing six days a week. In
matches, he always went Senpo to gear his team up and was known for his Kote offense. Returning to Seattle in
1936, he attended Broadway High School and Modern Business College, and after graduating was hired by Yokohama
Specie Bank in Seattle. He was a tournament winner in Vancouver BC in 1937. Because of his Japanese language
skill and involvement in Kendo, at the outbreak of World War II the FBI classified him as an enemy alien, and he
was incarcerated in Minidoka. In 1957 sailors of the Nippon Maru docked in Seattle asked to practice Kendo with
local kenshi, and Yasui Sensei and Kazuo Shoji Sensei joined the sailors on the ship’s deck. This led to the
revival of Kendo in Seattle. With Umajiro Imanishi Sensei, they started gathering in the second floor dance hall
of the Morrison Hotel, and thus Seattle Kendo Kai was reborn. In the 1970s when Imanishi Sensei suffered a
debilitating stroke, Yasui Sensei became head instructor. He was the founding charter Vice President of the WSKF
(now the PNKF), and continued its Advisor until his death the other day. Memorial services were held on Sunday,
May 27 at the Seattle Betsuin. Our deepest condolences to this kind, generous, cheerful and humble man’s wife of
67 years, Ruby, sons Kenneth (Joann), and Ronald, daughter Alice, and grandchildren Haeda, Hanna, Shawn and
Timothy.
